The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM) has issued an air quality alert for Washington and Newport Counties. The forecast indicates that ground-level ozone will reach unhealthy levels on Sunday, June 22, 2025. This situation is expected to occur during the afternoon and continue into the late evening.
According to DEM, “the highest ozone levels are expected in southern portions of Rhode Island along the immediate coastline,” with peak levels anticipated in the late afternoon and evening. Additionally, fine particles from wildfire smoke are predicted to reach moderate levels statewide.
Health officials warn that exposure to unhealthy ozone levels may lead to throat irritation, coughing, chest pain, shortness of breath, and increased risk of respiratory infections. These conditions can worsen asthma and other lung issues, especially affecting children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing respiratory problems.
To mitigate health risks, residents are advised to reduce prolonged or heavy outdoor exertion. Taking frequent breaks and choosing less strenuous activities is recommended. People should also monitor for symptoms such as coughing or shortness of breath. Those with asthma or lung conditions should adhere to their action plans and have quick-relief medications readily available.
For scheduling outdoor activities safely, it is suggested they be planned for the morning when ozone levels are lowest and typically good on the Air Quality Index.
