The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM) has issued a forecast indicating unhealthy fine particle levels across the state for Saturday, June 26, 2025. This situation arises due to smoke from Canadian wildfires, which is expected to persist into Sunday. However, fine particle levels are anticipated to reduce to upper moderate on the Air Quality Index by then.

Residents can expect poor air quality, reduced visibility, and a noticeable smell of smoke. The DEM advises that wildfire smoke contains tiny particles that may irritate the eyes, nose, throat, and lungs and could exacerbate symptoms in individuals with asthma or heart conditions.

To minimize exposure during this period, people with respiratory or cardiac issues should remain indoors with windows closed when smoke levels are high. It is also recommended to limit outdoor activities, opt for less strenuous tasks outside, wear a properly fitted N95 mask when outdoors, set car air systems to “recirculate,” and adhere to personal health management plans during air alerts.

Further information about current air quality readings is available through the US Environmental Protection Agency’s Fire and Smoke Map. The map provides detailed data from DEM and Rhode Island Department of Health monitors alongside regional low-cost sensors.

For updates on DEM programs and initiatives, residents can visit www.dem.ri.gov or follow DEM on social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter/X (@RhodeIslandDEM), or Instagram (@rhodeisland.dem). Additionally, individuals can subscribe for press releases and news directly from DEM’s Public Affairs Office.
