Attorney General Peter F. Neronha announced that a Cumberland man has been charged in Providence County Superior Court with multiple offenses including possessing an automatic handgun and a large capacity magazine after his arrest by the Rhode Island State Police on January 1, 2023.
On April 12, 2023, the Office of the Attorney General charged Christian Charro (age 25), by way of criminal information, with one count of carrying pistol without a permit, one count of carrying a weapon while under the influence, one count of possession of a large capacity magazine, one count of modification of a semi-automatic weapon, one count of reckless driving, and one count of driving under the influence.
The Rhode Island State Police conducted the investigation.
As alleged in the criminal information, at approximately 2 a.m. on January 1, 2023, the Rhode Island State Police were dispatched to assist with a motor vehicle crash on I-95 South in Providence. While monitoring traffic, troopers observed a black BMW pass the crash, and subsequently crash into a nearby Jersey barrier.
Troopers responded to the crash and attempted to administer three field sobriety tests, two of which the defendant failed and one which the defendant refused to perform.
Troopers then placed the defendant under arrest. During a search of the vehicle, troopers discovered a Glock 21 .45 caliber handgun in the glove box. Additionally, troopers found an open bottle of Hennessey Cognac.
Troopers discovered that the defendant had several outstanding warrants for his arrest originating from Plymouth, Mass., including one for aggravated assault.
During their investigation, troopers found that the handgun was loaded with a full 13-round magazine and was modified for automatic fire.
The defendant is scheduled for a pre-arraignment conference on May 24, 2023 in Providence County Superior Court.
