The Rhode Island Department of Health (RIDOH) and the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM) have issued a warning to avoid contact with Almy Pond in Newport due to harmful algae blooms (HABs). The advisory suggests that all recreational activities, including swimming, fishing, boating, and kayaking, should be avoided as they pose a health risk. The HABs are caused by blue-green algae or cyanobacteria naturally found in water bodies. These can produce toxins harmful to humans and animals. RIDOH’s State Health Laboratory detected these toxins or high cell counts from water samples collected by DEM.

Caution is advised throughout Almy Pond since HABs can shift locations within ponds and lakes. It is recommended not to drink untreated water or consume fish from affected areas. Pet owners should prevent their pets from drinking or swimming in this water. This advisory remains effective until further notice.

Contact with water containing blue-green algae may lead to skin irritation and symptoms such as stomachache, diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, dizziness, headache, fever, liver damage, and nervous system damage. Young children and pets are particularly vulnerable because they might swallow more water while playing near it. Those experiencing symptoms after contact should consult a healthcare provider.

In case of exposure:

– Rinse your skin immediately with clean water.
– Shower and wash clothes upon returning home.
– Wash exposed pets with clean water promptly; do not let them lick algae off their fur.
– Contact a veterinarian if your pet shows signs of illness like fatigue or gastrointestinal issues.
– Seek medical advice if you feel unwell after exposure.

Affected waters may appear bright to dark green with thick floating algae resembling green paint or pea soup. People and pets should avoid such waters.

To report suspected blue-green algae blooms, contact DEM’s Office of Water Resources at 401-222-4700 Press 6 or email DEM.OWRCyano@dem.ri.gov with photographs if possible. For more information on current advisories and data visit: www.dem.ri.gov/bluegreen
