The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM) has opened recruitment for seasonal positions such as lifeguards, park rangers, and other staff to work at state beaches, parks, and campgrounds. The department is seeking applicants interested in outdoor work and community service. According to DEM Director Terry Gray, “DEM relies on hiring a robust seasonal workforce each year to manage parks, beaches, and other facilities. Working outside at some of the state’s best destinations, gaining professional development experience, and having the opportunity to work with people from around the world are just a few of the many perks of joining our team.”

Full-time lifeguard roles are available at various locations including surf beaches like Roger Wheeler and Misquamicut, non-surf beaches such as Goddard Memorial State Park, and freshwater sites like Burlingame Campground and Lincoln Woods State Park. Pay rates range from $19.75 to $21.00 per hour depending on experience and position level. Lifeguards hired by May 22, 2026 may receive a one-time $500 sign-on bonus plus a $500 retention bonus if certain criteria are met.

Applicants for lifeguard positions must have state certification along with valid cards in lifeguard training, first aid, and CPR covering infant through adult care.

Seasonal jobs with DEM offer practical experience that can enhance resumés and may qualify for academic credit. These roles span administrative support, emergency response, technical fields and more. Seasonal employees may have opportunities to move into full-time positions within DEM.

A full list of available seasonal positions is posted online at apply.ri.gov. Most jobs require full-time availability including weekends and holidays; however part-time or internship options may be available for eligible candidates. The State of Rhode Island emphasizes its commitment to diversity and inclusion as an equal opportunity employer.
