The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM) has issued an air quality alert for Washington and Newport Counties. The alert warns of unhealthy levels of ground-level ozone expected on Wednesday, June 25, 2025. These elevated ozone levels are predicted to occur in the southern parts of Rhode Island, particularly along the immediate coastline.
The forecast indicates that peak ozone levels will begin late in the afternoon and continue well into the evening after sunset. However, the DEM anticipates good air quality and cooler weather for Thursday.
Unhealthy ozone levels can lead to health issues such as throat irritation, coughing, chest pain, shortness of breath, and an increased risk of respiratory infections. Individuals with asthma or other lung conditions may experience worsening symptoms. Children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing respiratory issues are especially at risk.
To mitigate these health risks, residents are advised to reduce prolonged or heavy outdoor exertion and take frequent breaks during outdoor activities. People should monitor for symptoms like coughing or shortness of breath and follow any existing action plans if they have asthma or lung conditions. Outdoor activities should be scheduled in the morning when ozone levels are typically lower.
Air quality can fluctuate throughout the day; therefore, staying informed is crucial. Residents can download the AirNOW app or visit www.airnow.gov for real-time updates and forecasts. Additional information is available on DEM’s air quality forecast page at www.dem.ri.gov/airquality.
