The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) is set to temporarily close the Rhode Island Welcome Center on I-95 North in Richmond for renovations starting January 5. The facility, located between Exit 4 and Exit 7, will undergo interior renovations and utility upgrades, including new restrooms. During the closure, RIDOT has arranged for temporary restroom facilities equipped with heating and air conditioning. These facilities will be available around the clock until the center reopens in late fall 2026.
Tourist information services will be relocated to a nearby trailer staffed by security personnel. Limited vending machines will also be accessible during the construction period. The $4.1 million renovation project includes mechanical, electrical, and plumbing upgrades, such as a new well and pump station for water supply. Additionally, the restrooms will be completely renovated, and other enhancements like new flooring, interior painting, a welcome desk, and improved security systems are planned.
The Welcome Center originally opened in 1989 but was closed from 2012 to 2016 by previous RIDOT administrations. Over the past decade, various improvements have been made to the building’s exterior and security measures. Annually, more than 180,000 visitors use the center. All construction projects may experience schedule changes due to unforeseen circumstances or weather conditions.
These renovations are part of RhodeWorks’ efforts to maintain Rhode Island’s infrastructure while considering environmental impacts. More information can be found at www.ridot.net/RhodeWorks.
