On February 12, the Rhode Island Department of Transportation will change the temporary traffic pattern on the Frenchtown Road Bridge (Route 402) over Route 4 in East Greenwich. The current lane reduction from two lanes to one in each direction will remain in effect. This change was rescheduled from an earlier date due to adverse weather. Source.
The adjustment is part of ongoing work to replace the structurally deficient bridge. RIDOT is nearing completion of the first phase, which involves replacing the eastbound portion of the bridge. Traffic will be shifted onto this newly built section so that demolition and replacement of the westbound side can begin.
During this second phase, restrictions on certain left turns at the intersection with Frenchtown Road, Davisville Road, and the on-ramp to Route 4 North will continue. Left turns at these locations will not be permitted, and recommended alternate routes remain in place for affected drivers.
The Devil’s Foot Road Bridge, located east of Old Baptist Road/Davisville Road intersection, remains closed for reconstruction. Detours are posted for those traveling between the bridge and Post Road (Route 1), directing them to use Post Road to Devil’s Foot Road or Route 403 West toward Route 4 as needed. For those heading eastbound from Route 2 to Route 4 North, drivers should remain on Frenchtown Road for about half a mile and use the second left-lane jughandle to reverse direction onto Frenchtown Road and reach the Route 4 on-ramp.
This temporary traffic pattern is expected to stay in place until late summer when work on the westbound portion is complete and all lanes are restored. The project is part of a larger $76.8 million multi-bridge initiative that also includes replacing bridges carrying Route 2 over Route 4 and Devil’s Foot Road over Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor. The entire project is scheduled for completion in Spring 2027.
