The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM) and the Rhode Island Department of Health (RIDOH) have reported a second detection of West Nile Virus (WNV) in the state this season. The virus was identified in a mosquito sample collected by DEM in Bristol on July 28, with testing conducted by the Rhode Island State Health Laboratories.
No evidence of Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE), Jamestown Canyon Virus (JCV), or additional WNV was found in other mosquito samples gathered statewide. The first case of WNV this year was detected on July 21 in East Providence.
WNV is recognized as the primary mosquito-borne disease in the United States. Most people infected do not experience symptoms, but about one in five may develop a fever and other symptoms. There are currently no vaccines or specific treatments available for WNV infection.
