The Rhode Island Voting Access Coalition (RIVAC) has initiated the Let RI Vote for Same Day Registration campaign. This coalition, comprising over 30 groups, is advocating for a constitutional amendment to be included on the 2026 ballot that would allow same-day voter registration. Currently, Rhode Island requires voters to register 30 days before Election Day, which is the earliest deadline in the United States.

John Marion, executive director of Common Cause Rhode Island, expressed concern about the state's voter turnout in recent elections. “In the 2024 election, Rhode Island’s voter turnout was below the national average, and the lowest in New England,” he said. He added that same-day registration is already implemented in 22 states and emphasized its importance for Rhode Island.

Secretary of State Gregg M. Amore also supports this initiative. He stated, “I’m proud to stand with our partners in once again calling for Rhode Island voters to have the opportunity to remove one of the most restrictive voter registration deadlines in the country.” He noted that early registration deadlines can disenfranchise eligible voters and stressed the need for inclusive participation.

Patrick Crowley, President of RI AFL-CIO, highlighted public support for same-day registration: “With 54% of Rhode Islanders in support of same-day voter registration, it’s clear that the people are ready for change." He urged lawmakers to heed public opinion and abolish the current 30-day requirement.

RIVAC's membership includes organizations such as AARP RI, Black Lives Matter PAC RI, Brown Votes, Climate Action RI, Common Cause Rhode Island, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., Economic Progress Institute among others.
