The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM) is actively seeking individuals to fill important seasonal roles, including lifeguards and park rangers, at state beaches, parks, and campgrounds. The department is encouraging those interested in outdoor work and enhancing visitor experiences to apply through DEM's seasonal employment webpage.
"DEM relies on hiring a robust seasonal workforce each year to manage parks, beaches, and other facilities," said DEM Director Terry Gray. "Working outside at some of the state's premier travel destinations, gaining professional development experience for future degree programs and employment, and having the opportunity to meet and work with people from around the world are just a few of the many perks of joining DEM's team."
Lifeguard positions are open at various state swimming areas, including surf beaches like Roger Wheeler and Misquamicut. Pay ranges from $18.75 to $20.00 per hour depending on location, experience, and position level. Lifeguards hired by June 27, 2025, may qualify for a $500 sign-on bonus and an additional $500 retention bonus if certain conditions are met.
Candidates for lifeguard roles must be state-certified and possess valid certifications in lifeguard training, first aid, and CPR across all age groups.
DEM offers seasonal positions that provide practical experience beneficial for resumes or earning credits towards degree programs. These roles span various fields such as environmental sciences, engineering, program analysis, research opportunities, administrative tasks, clerical duties, emergency response efforts among others. Seasonal work with DEM could potentially lead to full-time employment within the organization.
Applicants can view available positions online at apply.ri.gov. Most roles require full-time commitment with weekend and holiday hours included. The State of Rhode Island promotes diversity in its workforce as an equal opportunity employer. Part-time positions or internship credits might also be offered to eligible candidates.
