Common Cause Rhode Island has initiated its 2024 Election Protection Program, seeking volunteers to serve as poll monitors. This effort is part of a nationwide nonpartisan coalition aimed at assisting voters by addressing barriers they may face at the polls.
The coalition recruits and trains thousands of volunteers annually, deploying them to polling places across the United States, including Rhode Island. These volunteers are tasked with helping voters understand voting rules and overcome obstacles such as misinformation and complex procedures. They will receive training and support to effectively assist voters.
John Marion, Executive Director of Common Cause Rhode Island, emphasized the importance of voter assistance: “With voter enthusiasm sky high, we want to make sure all voters know their rights and can cast a ballot freely on Election Day.” He noted that many voters still encounter challenges like language barriers and locating their correct polling stations.
The Election Protection coalition operates independently of any political campaign or party. Poll monitors report on various aspects of the voting process, including wait times and accessibility issues. Common Cause Rhode Island plans to station numerous volunteers throughout the state.
Volunteers address immediate problems at polling sites and refer more complex issues to the 866-OUR-VOTE hotline for further assistance. Those interested in volunteering can visit protectthevote.net for more information.
